Common Causes of Shoulder Pain

The shoulder is a complex joint that offers extraordinary mobility while providing a junction where the spine and neck nerves connect with the body. If you live or work in and around Nitro, WV, and experience shoulder discomfort or pain, Dr. Jay McClanahan of Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center offers chiropractic and complementary therapy options to help you move pain-free.

The shoulder joints are complex, consisting of -

  • The Acromioclavicular Joint – the joint that defines the meeting point of the collarbone and shoulder blade.
  • The Glenohumeral Joint – the joint where the shoulder socket meets the upper arm bone.

The pain and discomfort that can be felt in the shoulder region typically stem from spinal misalignment or some sort of injury or traumatic event that causes damage, as noted below. While pain manifests differently for most, typical shoulder symptoms include –

  • Throbbing, sharp, dull, or radiating pain.
  • Stiffness or a reduced/limited range of motion for the shoulder joints.
  • A tingling or numbness is often described as pins and needles.
  • Sensitivity or tenderness or shoulder soreness, especially when applying pressure.

Common Reasons for Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain can occur at any time; however, most people who experience shoulder pain find the discomfort intensifies at night when the joints naturally stiffen. Sensations may vary from dull to sharp, aching or burning, being aggravated when you begin to move.

The most common causes of shoulder pain are-

  • Overuse results in strained muscles.
  • Arthritis affecting the shoulder joint.
  • Tendonitis or tendinopathy.
  • Inflammation of the shoulder bursa (bursitis).
  • Ligament tears.
  • Nerve compression or pinching.
  • A rotator cuff injury.
  • Shoulder impingement syndrome.
  • Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis.
  • Dislocation of the shoulder joint.
  • Pain referred from other muscles.
  • Years of poor posture.

Relaxing Your Muscles

Muscles can become tight for various reasons, which often leads to symptoms like stiffness, discomfort, and pain. According to Dr. Jay McClanahan of Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center, with a location that serves the greater Nitro, WV, vicinity, proactively choosing to loosen your tight muscles can reduce pain and discomfort while improving flexibility and preventing potential injuries.

Ways to Relax Your Muscles

The simplest way to keep your muscles relaxed is to keep them hydrated because dehydration can cause muscles to stiffen and tighten. In addition, consider these techniques to relax your muscles, some of which can be practiced at home, and some are available at Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center:

Stretching

Simple or therapeutic stretching is an effective way to loosen tight muscles while enhancing flexibility. However, it is important to be slow and deliberate to avoid forcing yourself into uncomfortable or painful positions. Static stretching—holding a stable position for at least 30 seconds—is among the most effective techniques for loosening tight muscles, but you need to warm up before doing it.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy helps reduce the muscular knots that create restriction, loosening tight muscles and improving circulation. We offer specialized massages, including relaxation massages, deep tissue massages, and more.

Heat Therapy

Applied heat helps muscles relax and loosen. Heat, which should never be applied directly to your skin, can be applied in various ways, including –

·        A heating pad.

·        A hot water bottle.

·        A warm bath, shower, or hot tub.

Exercise

Regular and therapeutic exercises can help to keep muscles flexible and strong.

What Are the Benefits of Loosening Your Muscles?

Keeping your muscles loose offers these benefits -

Reduced Discomfort and Pain

Tight muscles lead to stiffness and, ultimately, pain and discomfort.

Better Flexibility

Muscles that are loose remain more flexible, increasing your range of motion.

Increased Circulation

Relaxed muscles facilitate blood circulation, promoting the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to tissues and organs.

Injury Prevention

Tighter muscles enhance your risk of injury because they become more prone to strain and overuse.

Improved Posture

Tight muscles often lead to poor postural habits, back pain, and muscle discomfort. Maintaining tight muscles helps to maintain correct posture and prevent potential issues.

Stress Relief

Stress causes tight muscles. Choose relaxation techniques – yoga, meditation, etc. - for your overall well-being.

Signs and Causes of Kyphosis

Kyphosis refers to a spinal condition that results in a forward curvature of the vertebrae in the upper back. According to Dr. Jay McClanahan of Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center, with an office that serves the greater Nitro, WV, area, normal upper back kyphosis has a range that exists between 10 and 50 degrees. However, excessive or hyper-kyphosis can cause your upper back to appear more rounded – sometimes called “a round back” or a “hunch-backed.”

Signs of Kyphosis

Mild cases of kyphosis typically cause no obvious signs or symptoms. When the condition becomes moderate or more severe, the following may also be experienced as additional symptoms of hyper-kyphosis –

  • Shortness of breath.
  • Back pain or discomfort.
  • The head bends forward.
  • Back stiffness restricts movement.
  • Tingling sensations in the legs.
  • Tight hamstrings.

Causes of Kyphosis

There are several types of kyphosis. These include the following -

  • Postural kyphosis refers to a curvature of the spine.
This type of kyphosis is typically caused by constant slouching, poor posture, or by toting heavy items on your back.
  • Scheuermann’s kyphosis is developmental and happens during bone growth spurts.
This type of kyphosis is caused by a spinal structural deformity in which vertebrae grow in a wedge shape rather than rectangularly.
  • Congenital kyphosis refers to a curvature of the spine that occurs during gestation.
This type of kyphosis occurs when vertebrae do not segment/form in the womb.

If the spine’s curvature becomes extreme (beyond expected or established ranges), any of the above-mentioned is considered hyper-kyphosis.

Prevention of Postural Kyphosis

Fortunately, there are ways to proactively prevent postural kyphosis. This is accomplished by addressing known risk factors that encourage the development of this condition. Following the guidance noted below will help you reduce your risk of developing a spinal curvature or hyper-kyphosis -

  • Do not carry excess weight, and try to maintain a healthy, recommended weight.
  • Be mindful of your posture, and try to maintain good posture.
  • Be consistent with exercises that help to strengthen your back and abdominal muscles.
  • Carry heavy loads in backpacks or rolling bags rather than on the shoulders.

Note that Kyphosis is only one type of spinal curvature.

  • Lordosis refers to an inward spinal curve - causing an arching of the lower back.
  • Scoliosis refers to a curve to the left or right.

A spine typically has a certain amount of upper back kyphosis and lower back lordosis.

What are Chiropractic Adjustments For?

If you live in pain or are feeling less than your best, don’t lose hope. Dr. Jay McClanahan and the team at Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center of Nitro, WV, offer chiropractic adjustments and other techniques to help.

The Purpose of Chiropractic Adjustments

Any time you visit a healthcare provider, and they want to administer some sort of treatment, you wonder what the treatment is for and what exactly it will do. It’s no different when you visit a chiropractor who recommends adjustments. Below, Dr. McClanahan and the team at Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center of Nitro, WV, explain chiropractic adjustments, their purpose, and how you can benefit.

What Are Adjustments For?

To put it simply, adjustments are used to restore alignment to the musculoskeletal system. This short answer, however, leaves one wondering why alignment is so important.

Your body wasn’t haphazardly thrown together. Your bones are stacked on top of one another to help your body stay upright. Between them sits discs that cushion your bones. Muscles, ligaments, and tendons surround them to provide support and help you move. And nerves travel out to the rest of the body from the spinal cord to ensure your body does its various jobs.

As the bones are in the midst of this intricate structure, any misalignment can throw the entire system off balance. A misaligned bone puts unnecessary stress, strain, and pressure on the surrounding discs, nerves, muscles, and other soft tissues.

Unfortunately, this can lead to pain, muscle tension, numbness, weakness, burning sensations, impaired nerve function, and more. Adjustments are a technique used to restore proper alignment, eliminating undue pressure, strain, and related symptoms.

Benefits of Adjustments

A misalignment can lead to many types of symptoms – some of which are mild while others can be debilitating. And they can vary among the people experiencing them, which means the benefits of restoring alignment can vary, too. However, some common benefits include relief from:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Joint pain
  • Sciatica
  • Shoulder pain
  • Knee pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Limited range of motion

Adjustments also help improve nerve function and blood flow, which can have a direct impact on your general health and wellness.

Learn more about the healing power of chiropractic adjustments and how they can help you by visiting Dr. McClanahan at Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center of Nitro, Cross Lanes, Charleston, St. Albans, and Teays Valley, WV. You can schedule an appointment by calling our team at (304) 776-1520.

Holistic Ways to Manage Arthritis

Arthritis is a disease that affects at least 25% of the population, according to the OASH. There are several types of arthritis out there, but they all involve excessive pain and inflammation in the joints. It's commonly treated with medications that suppress the immune system, but did you know arthritis symptoms can often be reduced without this type of intervention? At Dr. J. Chiropractic and Wellness Center of Nitro, WV, we advocate for the use of holistic, non-invasive treatment methods wherever possible, and also use them on a complementary basis. In this article, we'll cover some of the best ways to manage arthritis naturally.

1. Exercise at your Level

Exercise is a great way to lubricate the joints and reduce extra weight. Being overweight places excess strain on the joints and worsens symptoms, but it's important to choose exercises that don't irritate your condition. Low-impact exercise is usually recommended in these situations. Things such as walking, biking, and swimming will allow you to stay active in a healthy way.

2. Herbs and Other Natural Remedies

Herbs have been used for millennia to resolve health issues. Some of them boil down to superstition, but some of them have serious evidence of their effectiveness. Tumeric, for example, is extremely effective at reducing joint pain and inflammation. Hot and cold therapy and meditation are also sometimes effective at relieving arthritis symptoms.

3. Healthy Lifestyle Changes

All of the common unhealthy lifestyle habits exacerbate arthritis. They may even be underlying causes of it. This includes smoking, drinking, and unhealthy diets. If you're unsure which of your habits contribute to your symptoms, feel free to reach out to Dr. J. Chiropractic and Wellness Center of Nitro, WV. Dr. McClanahan is available for consultations to discuss your situation. Surprisingly, stress also has a serious impact on arthritis. Try to keep calm and cut stress out of your life. You might just feel better!

Give us a call at (304) 776-1520. We look forward to hearing from you!

Maintaining Good Back Health During Pregnancy

Pregnancy in Nitro, WV, can be a beautiful time, but it can also be stressful on the expecting mother's body. That's why new moms must take extra care to support their back. Luckily, with the team at Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center, pregnant patients can have all the support they need for a healthy back. Visiting the center can provide therapeutic practices that help your back even after delivery.

The Benefits of Massage

An expectant mother has a lot of weight bearing down on her back. As your belly expands, your center of gravity pushes forward, which can put more pressure on your lumbar spine and feet. Luckily, when you visit the Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center team, you can take advantage of chiropractic massage.

Chiropractic massage is not the same as getting a deep tissue massage or an intensive spinal adjustment. After all, your local chiropractor understands how vulnerable your body is at this time. Rest assured that massage therapists won't do anything that can cause harm. This type of massage technique focuses on your back and your feet. Taking advantage of these regular massages can help ease your back pain and stress. These sessions can also provide advice on how you can ease your back at home with various stretching techniques.

Feet and Back Connection

As your local chiropractor will tell you, your feet can affect your back. When you don't stand straight or walk properly, it puts pressure your spine and back muscles. That's why you should have the right footwear and posture. Whether you're standing or sitting you should keep your feet as comfortable as possible. Thanks to hormones, weight pressure, and sometimes underlying conditions, it is easy for feet and ankles to get swollen. Women can prevent or ease the situation during pregnancy in Nitro, WV, by having comfortable footwear and customized orthotics.

The compassionate team at Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center wants to help expectant mothers as much as possible at this time. Our expertise in chiropractic care and massage therapy can ease your back stress during pregnancy in Nitro, WV. Call our office at 304-776-1520 for an appointment today.

Lifestyle Improvements to Prevent Back Pain

Back pain is a common ailment that affects countless people throughout the United States. At Dr. J's Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Nitro, WV, Dr. Jay McClanahan works with patients experiencing seemingly random back pain every day. No symptom is without a cause, though. In this article, we'll cover some lifestyle adjustments you can try out to relieve back pain.

1. Stay Active Throughout the Day

Spending the day sitting down has been fairly common in recent years, but it wasn't for our ancestors. Our bodies are built to move. A lot. When we spend all day on the couch or at the office, it doesn't give the muscles enough stimulation to grow strong. Even if sitting down all day is a part of your job, stand up every twenty minutes to move and stretch. With professional oversight, people should try to work regular exercise into their schedules, but 5 jumping jacks a few times a day will  be better for most people than none.

2. Avoid Straining the Muscles

Many people will lift heavy items without thought, but lifting improperly can strain the muscles, wear the joints, and irritate underlying conditions. For example, herniated discs are commonly the result of excessive back strain. It's best to avoid activities you aren't strong enough to do confidently, but when that's not possible, maintain a straight back and lift from the legs to avoid improper strain on the spine.

3. Evaluate Posture and Sleeping Position

Sometimes, something as seemingly innocent as the sleeping position can worsen back pain. For example, side-sleepers commonly experience lower back pain. This can be avoided by placing a pillow between the knees. Also, trying to be mindful of posture throughout the day can help improve health.

4. See a Chiropractor Regularly

A chiropractor is able to give you advice on how to preserve and improve your back health. They also have countless treatment options at their disposal to help with back pain. If you need a regular chiropractor in the Nitro, WV, area, reach out to Dr. J's Chiropractic and Wellness Center. Dr. McClanahan is always taking new patients.

Whiplash is a traumatic injury of the neck. It's caused by forcible and sudden movement, or bending of the neck back and forth in a forward-to-backward position or vice versa. Patients are most likely to suffer from whiplash after an automobile accident, especially if they are rear-ended during a collision.  Other patients displaying symptoms of whiplash are those who regularly participate in contact sports like football, rugby, and ice hockey, where the possibility of being injured is high.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Whiplash?

The severity of your whiplash will depend on the severity of your injury and the symptoms vary from mild to debilitating. While this condition is not completely understood, it can affect the cervical spine and discs, nerves, muscles, and tendons in the neck area. Common symptoms include:

  • Muscle spams
  • Shoulder and/or back pain
  • Dizziness and disorientation
  • Tiredness
  • Limited range of motion in the neck area

How Can Chiropractic Help Me?

Dr. McClanahan at Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center serving Nitro, WV, is well-versed in identifying and treating whiplash using non-invasive chiropractic interventions to relieve your pain, improve range of motion, and address soft tissue tenderness and muscle spasms.

After a complete assessment that is likely to include a diagnostic tool such as X-rays, Dr. McClanahan can recommend a course of treatment that is likely to include chiropractic interventions like:

  • Adjustments and manipulations to realign the spinal column.
  • DTS spinal decompression therapy to decompress or stretch the spine and allow improved blood flow and nutrient transfer.
  • Massage therapy to relieve soft tissue aches and tension associated with whiplash.
  • Electrical stimulation therapy to reduce muscle swelling and relieve trigger points that are causing the muscles to tense up.

What is Degenerative Disc Disease?

Degenerative disc disease is a spinal condition that affects the discs of the spine. Spinal discs are responsible for providing cushion between the vertebrae and enhancing spinal mobility. Nearly everyone experiences some disc degeneration as they age, but those with degenerative disc disease have a serious problem. At the Dr. J. Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Nitro, WV, Dr. Jay McClanahan is able to identify degenerative disc disease and recommend treatments to combat it.

What is degenerative disc disease?

Degenerative disc disease involves wear and tear on the cartilaginous outer ring of the discs between the vertebrae, or their loss of inner fluid. When these discs start to break down, it can be extremely painful and limit mobility. This is because the discs serve to cushion spinal movement and absorb shock, so when they're not in good shape, it can make even walking painful. Cartilage breaks down with age normally, but it can be accelerated by issues like excessive slouching and strain that compresses and tears the tissue. There are a few different kinds of degenerative disc disease, so be sure you ask your chiropractor which one you have.

Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease

The most common symptoms of degenerative disc disease include stiffness in the spine, pain while doing certain activities, and muscle spasms. Decreased space between the vertebrae can cause pinched nerves, so numbness and tingling in the legs aren't unusual. As the compressed nerve worsens, it can also cause muscular weakness.

How is degenerative disc disease treated?

Treatment for degenerative disc disease varies from person to person. Depending on the unique spine in question, typical chiropractic care for pain management may be best. The goal is to reduce pain and minimize further wear on the discs. Manual chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression therapy, or even physical therapy can be beneficial. During your initial consultation with Dr. McClanahan of Dr. J Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Nitro, WV, he'll evaluate your unique situation and prescribe a treatment plan to help you achieve your goals.

If you suspect you are suffering from degenerative disc disease in the Nitro, WV, area, contact Dr. J Chiropractic and Wellness Center. Dr. McClanahan would be happy to meet for a consultation and discuss your options. Simply give us a call at (304) 776-1520 to ask questions about how to get started. Preventing Pain in Runners

Running is a movement that is natural to humans. It should be easy and pain-free. When runners feel pain while running or jogging, there is something wrong. At Dr. J Chiropractic and Wellness Center of Nitro, WV, we want to help our patients resolve chiropractic issues before it becomes an office visit. In this article, we'll cover both how to avoid developing pain while running and what to do if you already have it. Dr. Jay McClanahan is a certified chiropractor with a passion for healthy exercise and training.

Why might someone feel pain while running?

There are a few different reasons someone might feel pain in their knees or other joints while running. Most often, weight and shock are not being properly distributed up the legs and spine. This causes excess wear on the tissues and ligaments, leading to pain. Other potential causes of running pain include too much exercise and underlying conditions.

How to Relieve Runners Pain at Home

There are several measures runners can take to prevent and relieve pain. The most important thing is the shoes they wear. Most shoes constrict the toes and don't offer enough support, worsening poor weight distribution across the feet and legs. Remember that humans originally ran on strong, bare feet. The closer a runner gets to that, the better. Runners can do targeted exercises to strengthen weak muscles in the legs and feet. It's also important to ensure proper form while running. The body works best in its proper anatomical position.

How can a chiropractor help relieve running pain?

At your initial consultation with Dr. McClanahan at Dr. J Chiropractic and Wellness Center, he'll identify the source of your running pain. He can then prescribe any relevant lifestyle changes and treatment methods to mitigate the issue. It can often be resolved by obtaining proper footwear and undergoing physical therapy. Other times, there is an underlying condition, and other measures may be necessary.

If at-home remedies aren't working, come visit Dr. McClanahan at Dr. J Chiropractic and Wellness Center. We help people in the Nitro, WV, area overcome musculoskeletal conditions with natural chiropractic techniques. We can help you relieve pain and optimize your athletic performance. To schedule an initial consultation, contact us today at (304) 776-1520. We look forward to helping you achieve optimal health and wellness.

How Massage Therapy Helps Relieve Back Pain

Massage therapy is often used in combination with chiropractic care because both offer techniques that aim to improve one’s mobility,  flexibility, and the relief of pain. Dr. Jay McClanahan and his staff at Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Nitro, WV, notes both techniques often work in harmony, allowing for a faster recovery because when the body can relax, it’s easier to realign the spine and help optimize your nervous system functioning.

How Massage Therapy Helps Relieve Back Pain

Massage therapy consists of manipulating the body’s soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissue), - which may include stroking, kneading, tapping, compression, and vibration. Massage therapy is particularly helpful in relieving back pain as follows –

  • A massage helps to relax tense muscles in the back, which usually helps alleviate muscle spasms, back pain, and tightness. Note that massage aids in the reduction of stress and anxiety, which are proven contributors to muscle tension that can only aggravate an already painful back condition.
  • Massage therapy loosens tight muscles, which improves flexibility and increases your back’s range of motion, making it easier to move due to less stiffness.
  • Massage promotes improved blood circulation - especially to the muscles. These nutrients and oxygen are what the tissues need to reduce inflammation and help in the repair process.
  • Massage therapy, through its relaxing effects, begins to reduce stress levels (and associated cortisol levels), which can help alleviate the emotional/physical components that contribute to back pain.
  • Massages can assist in the correction of muscle imbalances – promoting better alignment and reducing back strain.
  • Massage stimulates the release of the body's natural painkillers - endorphins. These natural hormones help reduce pain perception and even offer a sense of well-being.
  • For individuals with injuries that have led to chronic back pain, a massage can help break down scar tissue in the muscles and connective tissues, which helps reduce related back pain.

In addition, research continues to reveal how important it is to encourage your mind/body awareness as this can help identify tension areas early and allow you to take steps to avoid these potential issues from worsening through the use of self-care techniques.

How Can a Chiropractor Help With Your Weight Loss Goals?

When someone says they are consulting a chiropractor, it’s reasonable to assume they are seeking pain relief. After all, chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression, and numerous other chiropractic treatment methods focus on alleviating pain. Still, that doesn’t mean a chiropractor can only help you that way. For instance, seeking chiropractic care also makes sense if you’re trying to lose weight.

So, how can a chiropractor help you achieve sustained weight loss?

To get started, your chiropractor can examine your condition to determine why you are dealing with weight issues in the first place. They can run tests to check on your body’s performance and ask questions to learn more about your diet and lifestyle. Once they have all that information, they can start putting together a weight loss plan specifically designed for you.

Your new wellness plan may include some chiropractic treatment. After examining your physical condition, your chiropractor may discover that underlying injuries are making it harder for you to exercise. They can address those injuries so you can develop better exercise habits.

Speaking of exercise, your chiropractor can also teach you exercises best suited for your physical capabilities. As you continue your wellness program, your chiropractor can re-evaluate your physical condition to determine if your exercise routine should be adjusted.

Lastly, your chiropractor can create a meal plan based on your body’s needs. They will consider your preferences and health concerns to ensure the new meal plan suits you perfectly.

Enjoy sustained weight loss in Nitro, WV, after partnering with Dr. McClanahan of Dr. J Chiropractic and Wellness Center.

Possible Consequences of Poor Posture

As children, many of us were admonished to sit up straight, stand tall, and walk with our shoulders back and not hunched over. However, as the years pass and life's stresses take their toll, many individuals don't think about posture until they finally experience pain from hunching over or other bad posture conditions. For those who work at a desk job, it is all too easy to slouch in your chair while typing. Maintaining poor posture for years can generate possibly serious consequences, such as back pain, spinal deterioration, neck pain, and headaches. It is never too late to take your health into your own hands and work to achieve better posture. Chiropractors are excellent practitioners to maintain a relationship with since they focus on issues of the musculoskeletal system and soft tissue, including helping patients find proper spinal alignment and excellent posture. For individuals interested in achieving outstanding posture and improved whole-body wellness in Nitro, WV, contact Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center to make an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Jay McClanahan.

Possible Consequences of Poor Posture

One of the most severe consequences of poor posture is a curvature of the spine. While a healthy spine forms a natural “S” shape, poor posture places excessive pressure In the wrong place, distorting the spine's natural curves. This spinal dysfunction can put your body at greater risk of injury. Many individuals who slouch experience excessive strain on the lower and upper back, specifically the tailbone and neck. Individuals with poor posture can experience a lack of quality sleep since pain in the back makes it difficult to find a comfortable position. Joint degeneration, poor digestion, rounded shoulders, a potbelly, and lack of motivation can also be negative consequences of poor posture. Over long periods, poor posture can also lead to poor circulation, constricted nerves, stress incontinence, constipation, and impaired lung function.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help Poor Posture?

Chiropractic adjustments, also known as spinal manipulation, are the most commonly recommended chiropractic treatment modalities for individuals. Chiropractic adjustments involve gentle or forceful manipulation of the spine into its proper alignment. This process is excellent for helping individuals achieve improved posture, improved circulation, reduced inflammation and pain, and a healthier spine. Dr. McClanahan offers outstanding spinal manipulation in his office in Nitro, WV.

Chiropractic adjustments are excellent for all generations, and Dr. McClanahan loves seeing multiple family members in a family chiropractic setting. If you want to achieve excellent posture for you and your loved ones, contact Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Nitro, WV, and make an appointment with Dr. McClanahan today!  (304) 776-1520

Signs of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It is a degenerative joint disease that occurs when the bones rub together due to worn tissue and cartilage that covers the joints. Cartilage has two functions in the body. It works as a lubricant and shock absorber, helping the bones in the joints move together safely and smoothly. For individuals with osteoarthritis, this movement of the joints and the bones is painful because the bones eventually rub together without the protection of cartilage. Osteoarthritis is frequently experienced in the neck, lower back, hips, hands, and knees. Chiropractic care can be an excellent treatment modality for osteoarthritis because chiropractic adjustments, also known as spinal manipulation, focus on creating alignment within the body. When the spine and the body are aligned, tissue inflammation is reduced, nerve function is improved, and there is less strain and stress on the affected joints. For patients in Nitro, WV, interested in addressing osteoarthritis with chiropractic care, Dr. Jay McClanahan with Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center provides outstanding care to all his patients.

Signs and Risk Factors for Osteoarthritis

The Cleveland Clinic estimates that more than 80% of adults over 55 have osteoarthritis, and 60% of these adults are symptomatic. Signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis include pain, stiffness, or swelling near a joint, joint deformity (looks different than it used to), a lack of strength and stability in a joint, and decreased range of motion. Risk factors for osteoarthritis include diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, and certain autoimmune diseases that affect the joints, such as lupus and scleroderma.

If you are concerned that you have osteoarthritis and you live in Nitro, make an appointment with Dr. McClanahan so he can properly diagnose your condition. In your first appointment, Dr. McClanahan will take a comprehensive medical history, including lifestyle choices and current symptoms. He may use X-rays or recommend an MRI, CT scan, or blood tests to rule out the possibility of other conditions. Osteoarthritis can be mild and non-disruptive in some patients and extremely painful and debilitating in others. Over time, the wearing down of the material between the joints can lead to damaged ligaments, tendons, bone, synovium, and meniscus (in the knee).

Chiropractic Treatment of Osteoarthritis

Chiropractic treatment of osteoarthritis will include gentle chiropractic adjustments to ensure the body and the joints are in alignment. Dr. McClanahan may also recommend personalized therapeutic exercises and other chiropractic services to help reduce pain and inflammation in his patients. Osteoarthritis is common, but you do not have to suffer in silence. Whiplash

One of the most common injuries that present in automobile accidents is whiplash. Whiplash occurs when the body, specifically the neck, is suddenly thrust forward and snaps back rapidly, which can happen in an accident when an individual is wearing a seatbelt. Whiplash has a variety of symptoms, including stiffness and pain in the neck, shoulder pain, headache, nausea, and numbness or pain in the arm or hand. More severe symptoms can include ear ringing, blurred vision, and difficulty with memory and concentration.

How Chiropractors Treat Whiplash and Auto Injuries

Chiropractors are holistic practitioners who can treat issues of the musculoskeletal system, including:

  • Neck, shoulder, arm pain
  • Upper and lower back pain
  • Hip, leg, and foot pain
  • Whiplash
  • Sciatica
  • Disc problems
  • Headaches
  • Soft tissue ailments
  • Muscle spasms and aches

The most common and recommended chiropractic treatment is chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation. Chiropractic adjustments realign the spine to its proper, natural position. This holistic and time-tested treatment reduces pain and inflammation, helps restore range of motion, reduces muscular tension, improves circulation, and helps the body heal faster. Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Nitro, WV, also offers chiropractic massage therapy as well as deep tissue, Swedish, relaxation, and youth massage to help individuals heal from auto injuries. Chiropractic treatment does not prescribe potentially addictive medication. Instead, spinal manipulation and chiropractic massage therapy focus on the alignment of the spine to relieve pain and take pressure off the nerves.

Help For Pinched Nerves

A pinched nerve occurs when there is damage or an issue with the nerve roots that branch off the spinal cord. Pinched nerves frequently occur in the lower back (lumbar spine) but can also occur in the neck (cervical spine) or anywhere along the spinal cord. Pinched nerves can also occur in the arms and legs if the tendons and ligaments are swollen, creating pressure on the nerves. Pinched nerves can be caused by a herniated disc (also known as a slipped disc), bone spurs (extra growths on a bone), compression of the nerve by surrounding tissue, or damaged spinal discs due to age or personal injury. Chiropractic care is an outstanding treatment modality for pinched nerves, as chiropractic focuses on creating optimal and healthy alignment of the spine, which relieves pressure off the nerve roots. For individuals experiencing a pinched nerve in Nitro, WV, contact Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Nitro, WV, to make an appointment with Dr. Jay McClanahan.

Symptoms of a Pinched Nerve

Pinched nerves present symptoms of pain, tingling, and numbness. Depending on the placement of the pinched nerve, one can experience:

  • A stiff neck with pain and numbness in the arm and shoulder (pinched nerve in the cervical spine)
  • Pain in the back, buttocks, hips, and legs (pinched lumbar nerve)
  • Pain in the upper chest and back (compressed lumbar and thoracic nerves)

Carpal tunnel syndrome results from a pinched nerve in the hand or wrist. It is important to note that pinched nerves that are not treated can lead to chronic pain and potentially permanent nerve damage.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help Pinched Nerves

Chiropractic care focuses on holistic alignment of the spine and musculoskeletal system to relieve pressure off the nerves, reduce inflammation, increase circulation, and alleviate pain without prescription medication. Patients in Nitro, WV, should make an appointment with Dr. McClanahan of Dr. J Chiropractic & Wellness Center if they suspect they may have a pinched nerve. Pinched nerves may require diagnostic tools such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs. These tests will allow Dr. McClanahan to observe the structures in the back and neck so that he can make a qualified diagnosis and assessment.

Once Dr. McClanahan identifies the impacted nerve, he will use spinal manipulation to align the spine and relieve pressure and compression on the affected nerves. Dr. McClanahan may also recommend chiropractic massage therapy to further strengthen and align the healthy, natural positioning of the spine.
